Cam-corder

How do I import movies if my Mac and iMovie no longer supports my cam-corder? When I first open iMovie it seems to notice my camera, but the video recorder disappears as a selection and doesn't give me an option to import from my device. My Mac recognizes the photos on the cam-corder but not the video. Strange because everything always use to just plug in and work with my mac?
